and to protect hope could paradoxically mean &#8220;to let it go where no-one can touch it&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-dc_4-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-dc-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Dani Cavallaro, an author of books related to anime, reflected on this by proposing that hope retains its purity and authenticity when it is ephemeral, evanescent and elusive.<sup id=\"cite_ref-dc_4-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-dc-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Hope may cause exertion and possibly pain, but denying hope is to deny the feasibility or and vision it provides.<sup id=\"cite_ref-dc_4-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-dc-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Miyazaki said that in the music video&#8217;s setting, humans live in an underground city after the surface of the Earth has been contaminated with radiation, creating a sanctuary for nature.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-:1-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>Miyazaki did not find this believable, though, as humanity would suffer on the surface instead.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_5-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-:1-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Miyazaki intentionally misinterpreted the lyrics to reflect upon the vision of a world filled with disease and radiation and people&#8217;s reactions to that world.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_5-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-:1-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Cryptically, he implied the two policemen might not be able to return to their old life, but offered no reason as to why.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:1_5-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-:1-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Cavallaro noted that the lyrics of the song include &#8220;ryuukou no kaze&#8221;, which translates to &#8220;flu&#8221; and is also an idiom for &#8220;the flu of fashion.&#8221; The author further interpreted it as &#8220;I always feel the urge to make a fresh start&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-dc_4-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-dc-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;suggesting this could be the &#8220;bleak acceptance of the ideological and economic codes that mold our lives in accordance with the imperative of planned obsolescence, or as a hopeful embracing of the genuine prospects of renewal and change.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-dc_4-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-dc-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Cavallaro suggested that despite the feminine appearance of the &#8220;angel&#8221;, it could be of a &#8220;preternatural order&#8221;, making gender or sex distinctions irrelevant.<sup id=\"cite_ref-dc_4-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-dc-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Miyazaki referred to the angelic creature as &#8220;tori no hito&#8221; or &#8220;a bird&#8217;s person&#8221; which is the nickname of&nbsp;<a title=\"Nausica\u00e4 (character)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nausica%C3%A4_(character)\">Nausica\u00e4<\/a>&nbsp;from his&nbsp;<a title=\"Nausica\u00e4 of the Valley of the Wind (manga)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nausica%C3%A4_of_the_Valley_of_the_Wind_(manga)\">Nausica\u00e4 of the Valley of the Wind manga<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a title=\"Nausica\u00e4 of the Valley of the Wind (film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nausica%C3%A4_of_the_Valley_of_the_Wind_(film)\">film<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-dc_4-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-dc-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Cavallaro noted another visual correspondence to&nbsp;<i><a title=\"Only Yesterday (1991 film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Only_Yesterday_(1991_film)\">Only Yesterday<\/a><\/i>&nbsp;with the oppressive urban environment and the freedom of open spaces.<sup id=\"cite_ref-dc_4-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-dc-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>During their April 1999 lecture series on&nbsp;<a title=\"Manga\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manga\">manga<\/a>,&nbsp;<a title=\"Anime\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anime\">anime<\/a>&nbsp;and the works of Miyazaki at the&nbsp;<a title=\"University of Dallas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Dallas\">University of Dallas<\/a>, Pamela Gossin, Professor of Arts and Humanities, and guest instructor Marc Hairston, research scientist in the William B. Hanson Center for Space Sciences, discussed&nbsp;<i>On Your Mark<\/i>&nbsp;in their lecture, &#8220;In the&nbsp;<i>Coda On Your Mark and Nausicaa<\/i>, and drew parallels to the&nbsp;<i>Nausica\u00e4<\/i>&nbsp;story, its titular character and its conclusion. Gossin and Hairston interpreted the release of the winged girl at the end of the video as Miyazaki setting free his character in a manner reminiscent of&nbsp;<a title=\"William Shakespeare\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Shakespeare\">William Shakespeare<\/a>&#8216;s symbolic liberation of his characters, through&nbsp;<a title=\"Prospero\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prospero\">Prospero<\/a>&#8216;s release of his servant&nbsp;<a title=\"Ariel (The Tempest)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ariel_(The_Tempest)\">Ariel<\/a>&nbsp;in his play&nbsp;<a title=\"The Tempest\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Tempest\">The Tempest<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The final volume of the&nbsp;<i>Nausica\u00e4<\/i>&nbsp;manga was released in January 1995. Miyazaki started creating&nbsp;<i>On Your Mark<\/i>&nbsp;that same month.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Kano(2006)_3-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-Kano(2006)-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>McCarthy highlighted similarities to different works and real life found throughout the film, remarking that the opening city sequence could be an homage to&nbsp;<i><a title=\"Akira (1988 film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akira_(1988_film)\">Akira<\/a><\/i>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<i><a title=\"Blade Runner\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blade_Runner\">Blade Runner<\/a><\/i>&nbsp;and the attack on the religious cult could be a reflection of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Aum Shinrikyo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aum_Shinrikyo\">Aum Shinrikyo<\/a>&nbsp;movement.<sup id=\"cite_ref-hm_1-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-hm-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><a title=\"Nausicaa.net\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nausicaa.net\">Nausicaa.net<\/a>&nbsp;stated the production occurred prior to the police raid following the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sarin_gas_attack_on_the_Tokyo_subway\">Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway<\/a>&nbsp;in March 1995.<sup id=\"cite_ref-linearity1_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-linearity1-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;McCarthy also noted that the film&#8217;s scientists&#8217; decontamination gear look like the hero of&nbsp;<i><a title=\"Porco Rosso\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Porco_Rosso\">Porco Rosso<\/a><\/i>&nbsp;and the rescue scene is reminiscent of&nbsp;<a title=\"Princess Leia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Princess_Leia\">Princess Leia<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a title=\"Star Wars\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Star_Wars\">Star Wars<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-hm_1-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-hm-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The encased or &#8220;box&#8221; structure in the film is an homage to the&nbsp;<a title=\"Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chernobyl_Nuclear_Power_Plant\">Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant<\/a>&nbsp;which was entombed in concrete following the&nbsp;<a title=\"Chernobyl disaster\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chernobyl_disaster\">Chernobyl disaster<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-hm_1-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-hm-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-dc_4-10\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-dc-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Miyazaki scholar&nbsp;<a class=\"new\" title=\"Seiji Kan\u014d (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Seiji_Kan%C5%8D&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Seiji Kan\u014d<\/a><span class=\"noprint\">&nbsp;(<a class=\"extiw\" title=\"ja:\u53f6\u7cbe\u4e8c\" href=\"https:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E5%8F%B6%E7%B2%BE%E4%BA%8C\">ja<\/a>)<\/span>&nbsp;observed that the urban settings have a&nbsp;<i>China Town style<\/i>&nbsp;and resemble the cityscapes of&nbsp;<a title=\"Mamoru Oshii\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mamoru_Oshii\">Mamoru Oshii<\/a>&#8216;s&nbsp;<i><a title=\"Ghost in the Shell\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghost_in_the_Shell\">Ghost in the Shell<\/a><\/i>&nbsp;animated film adaptation, in production at the time. While Miyazaki has been non-committal about the nature of his winged entity in&nbsp;<i>On your Mark<\/i>, Kan\u014d noted that the manga&nbsp;<i><a class=\"new\" title=\"Seraphim: 266,613,336 Wings (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Seraphim:_266,613,336_Wings&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Seraphim: 266,613,336 Wings<\/a><span class=\"noprint\">&nbsp;(<a class=\"extiw\" title=\"ja:\u30bb\u30e9\u30d5\u30a3\u30e0 2\u51046661\u4e073336\u306e\u7ffc\" href=\"https:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E3%82%BB%E3%83%A9%E3%83%95%E3%82%A3%E3%83%A0_2%E5%84%846661%E4%B8%873336%E3%81%AE%E7%BF%BC\">ja<\/a>)<\/span><\/i>, an unfinished collaborative effort by Oshii and&nbsp;<a title=\"Satoshi Kon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Satoshi_Kon\">Satoshi Kon<\/a>, with its&nbsp;<i>Angel Disease<\/i>&nbsp;theme, was still serialized in&nbsp;<a title=\"Animage\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Animage\">Animage<\/a>&nbsp;at the time Miyazaki was creating&nbsp;<i>On Your Mark<\/i>&nbsp;in 1995.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Kano(2006)_3-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_Your_Mark#cite_note-Kano(2006)-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Jesse shared this video short with me.
